Goats & Lamoids Unboxed: March 2024 Kids Sonder Agriculture Unboxed

Goats were among the first animals to be domesticated approximately 11,000 years ago in the Near East. Llamas were first domesticated and used as pack animals 4,ooo to 5,000 years ago. In Goats & Lamoids Unboxed we are learning about these amazing creatures and the nutrition that feeds our livestock animals.

There are around 2.5 million goats in the United States. Nearly 80 percent of America’s goats are raised for meat. Sixteen percent are raised for milk, with the remaining 6 percent comprised of Angora/Mohari goats raised for fiber. Lamoids, known as llamas and alpacas, are used for fiber, companion animals, livestock guardians and some meat.

Animal Science Activity: Animal Nutrition

Counter to the dominant stereotype about goats being willing to eat anything; they are very picky eaters. Like humans, animals need a balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. Four lessons take our agriculturists through the identification of the five nutrient groups, the feedstuffs that provide these nutrients, feed labels and feed types.

Featured are the Kids Sonder Agriculture Unboxed Common Livestock Feedstuff ID Flashcards.  Find them in the Agriculture Unboxed Shop.

Animal Health: Poopology

An animal’s manure can tell you a lot about the health of the animal and depending on the animal’s diet will form in different ways. In this lesson, our kids sonder agriculturists engage in learning about recognizing normal feces and identification by creating their own identification models. Just like the ones you would find online for wildlife identification. It’s animal science!
